On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Nancy School artist Jacques Gruber (1870-1936), in Sundhouse not far from Sélestat, the Humanist Library wishes to present a preview of part of his work, in resonance with that of another artist, selestadian, Victor Rubert (1895-1979). These two characters have in fact the fact that they designed boxes for the production of stained glass.
The City of Sélestat was able to acquire in 1995 a set of drawings, sketches and other preparatory documents from Rubert, in order to supply the graphic art collections of the Humanist Library. This exhibition is therefore an opportunity to highlight the fund of this Selestadian artist, by putting his works into perspective, and in particular the stained glass boxes he produced, with those of Gruber.
This exhibition is also an opportunity to present the diversity of Rubert's artistic expressions and a number of his works that have come down to us, in a harmonious dialogue between graphic arts and museum collections.
To illustrate Gruber's work, a certain number of pieces (stained glass boxes, wooden console and glass) will be loaned by the Musée de l'Ecole de Nancy, while the more Selestadian sequence has benefited from the support of the department in charge. of the City of Art and History label.
